Tony stretched, making his back crack, and everyone around the table chuckled. They were having their weekly poker and dinner night at Casa Gibbs, and they were all nicely relaxed. Lubricated, Tony mentally corrected.

A six pack of Dominion ale was done, Gibbs was working on the second, and Paula and Abby had brought some girlie drink, Smirnoff something. Tony’d tried one, and it was good. The second had gone down more smoothly. And the third? Tony was not giggling. DiNozzos didn’t giggle! Maybe he shouldn’t have had those couple shots of bourbon just before the girls had arrived.

Dinner done, Tony cleared the plates, wobbling slightly, and then joined everyone else in the living room. Gibbs, Paula, and Abby had moved the drinks in there and the girls had already claimed one end of the couch. Tony joined them, dropping down onto the couch, stretching his legs out. Gibbs was in the chair and if Tony twisted just right, he could touch his lover’s leg.

“You ever wonder what things would have been like if you hadn’t come on the team?” Tony asked, angling his bottle of blueberry lemonade toward Paula, snuggled on the couch with Abby.

“Director wanted me to take Ziva David for the team,” Gibbs said from around his third—fourth—beer of the night. Tony loved the way Gibbs’ lips surrounded the bottle. And that made him think of other things.

He coughed a couple of times, wanting to calm himself down as much as he wanted to focus on what Gibbs was saying. He’d heard this before, but knew it was news to Paula and Abby.

“No way,” Abby breathed out, eyes wide. “The director wanted Ziva on the team? But…she’s Mossad. How would that have worked?” Her brows knit together, her expression turning serious. “She doesn’t have clearances.”

“Thought I could teach her something,” Gibbs replied, shrugging. Tony knew that Gibbs’ refusal had caused a rift between Gibbs and the director. Ziva had been placed in Intel working with the Middle Eastern specialists on tracking terrorists, and though she and the team sometimes crossed paths, she wasn’t a part of their team in any way, shape, or form.

“I’m glad we have Paula,” Tony replied, tilting his bottle toward her. In the three years since Paula had joined the team, they’d become a cohesive unit, at times stronger than they’d been with Kate, though Tony knew the entire team felt her loss.

“Me too,” Abby said with a giggle. Abby was giggling too? They’d all definitely had too much to drink.

“Better make up the spare room,” he commented to Gibbs. There was no way he’d let the girls drive home—not to Paula’s place or Abbs’—in this shape.

“Done,” Gibbs replied, and Tony sensed he was trying to not roll his eyes. He nudged Tony’s foot with his and Tony sighed happily. These times were the only ones where both couples could be themselves around friends. It was nice to let their guards down and just be together, relaxed, two couples doing couple things together.

Tony couldn’t remember if Abby or Paula had figured them out first. Maybe it was some kind of super-secret girl-dar or something and they’d realized it at the same time. But he remembered the moment all too well, the tag team interrogation in Abbs’ lab, both of them volleying questions at him. Why was he always checking out Gibbs’ ass? Why did he look flushed whenever he and Gibbs came out of the restroom at the same time? Why hadn’t he been at home when Abby had needed him? How did Gibbs know how he took his coffee perfectly when he couldn’t remember how Paula took hers? Why did Gibbs completely flip out—Abby’s words—when Tony had been winged at a crime scene. Why? Why? Why?

And like a little boy caught stealing, he’d caved to his two best friends. He and Gibbs had started seeing each other just after Kate’s death. Gibbs had been worried about Tony soaking wet in the rain looking for evidence just after the shooting, and he’d come to Tony’s place with chicken soup.

In a guy like Gibbs, Tony’d known it was damn near a declaration of love. Chicken soup had led to pizza or Chinese takeout once a week—Gibbs had taken Kate’s death very personally, wasn’t getting along with the new director, and Tony figured that him bringing food over to Gibbs’ place was better than Gibbs brooding alone, not eating, and probably wearing a hole in his gut with all the bourbon he’d drink.

One thing had led to another, one look interpreted, one touch becoming bolder. And in a few weeks, they’d progressed from soup and takeout to makeout sessions. And sex, some of the most amazing sex Tony could ever have imagined.

Abby and Paula had been so positive about their relationship, but Tony and Gibbs hadn’t been interested in coming out to anyone else. Tony suspected McGee might know—or at least Probie hadn’t commented that Tony’s date stories had gotten more and more wild. And Ducky sometimes gave them that penetrating all-knowing Ducky look.

Gibbs had been concerned that the girls knew, but he’d become relieved when a meeting with Abby and Paula had revealed that they, too, were in a new relationship. And these meals had been born. First, it had been four coworkers hanging out, but quickly it’d changed to four friends.

And now? It was no-holds barred. Tony, Abby, and Paula talked, sometimes just chatting, sometimes venting. Even Gibbs sometimes spoke, though they rarely got him to really open up.

“What do you think you would have done if Gibbs hadn’t requested you for the team?” Abby asked, looking at Paula. The two women exchanged a look of love so strong it made Tony’s heart clench. And he wasn’t a romantic guy.

Gibbs’ foot ran over his leg and Tony caught his eye, knowing a goofy smile was starting to blossom. Okay, maybe he was kinda romantic. But only for Gibbs.

“Agent afloat,” Paula replied with a little shrug, cocking her head to stare into Abby’s eyes. They did this sometimes—got so intense and intimate that Tony wished he was anywhere but there. “I’d put in for team leader at the Pentagon, but Murphy decided to stay in after all.”

“Huh,” Gibbs said, regarding Paula. “You’re not senior field agent on mine. That a demotion when you were going for team leader?”

“No,” Paula said, and there was a passionate edge to her voice. “This team is the best—the best, Gibbs. I want to be with the best.”

“Know the team is his when I’m done.” It was a statement and not a question, and Tony sat up a little taller. He hated to think of a time when Gibbs wouldn’t be leading the team, but he was gratified that his lover had that much faith in him.

“It shouldn’t be any other way,” Paula replied, meeting Gibbs’ eyes. Though it had taken a while for her to earn his full respect, Gibbs and Paula had a great bond now. Not the same as with Kate, but it didn’t need to be the same either. Paula was a very different woman and agent.

“Glad we got that settled,” Gibbs said, breaking into one of his rare grins, the one that made him look so much younger, breathtakingly gorgeous.

They settled into comfortable silence for a bit—even Abby was relaxed around Paula, her frenetic energy mellowing. They were good for each other, just as good as Gibbs and Tony were.

“Anyone up for some poker?” Tony asked, waggling his eyebrows.

“Strip?” Abby’s eyes lit up.

“Only if there’s no touching. Nobody else gets their hands on my boy.”

My boy? Gibbs hadn’t ever referred to him like that before, and Tony could only gape, before he felt a brilliant smile appearing.

“Your boy?”

“Yep. Now get the cards. I’m playing to win.”

“On it, Boss!”

Perfect!

Love the idea of Paula joining the team after Kate. It's the way I wish the show had gone instead of Ziva. Loved Paula's character.

And where's the follow up fic with strip poker? :)
