Gibbs looked through the bars of the jail, fiddling with the large key ring. He hated having to do this—more than anything he’d hated to do. Tim and Christopher had been damn good deputies and that damn Frenchman had taken them out. He hadn’t even been able to call Doc to see to them. They’d been dead before they’d hit the tightly packed earth outside the saloon.
Their loss was gonna hurt the town, and this put Gibbs in a tough position, but it had to be done. The Fenchman and the Pinkerton agent he was working with were a blight on this town, and Sheriff Gibbs was going to put them behind bars with the help of this man, for once and for all.
“Deadeye,” he drawled, watching the man. Deadeye DiNozzo had started a fight in the saloon over the delectable charms of prissy Ms. Caitlin, daughter of the town preacher. Ms. Caitlin wasn’t interested in his big city charm—or the size of his guns, or the sureness of his aim. The resulting fight had gotten Deadeye tossed in the town jail.
But now he was getting out. Gibbs had a purpose for him. He motioned the man closer. “Got a proposition for ya…”
