Gibbs looked at the clock for the fourth time, pacing across the kitchen and into the living room. Jackson’s flight had been delayed. And even with the delays he should have been here already, but traffic was a bear.

Dad had insisted on taking a shuttle from the airport and letting himself in, but they hadn’t counted on his flight being late and the afternoon gridlock and light flurries essentially closing the city down. His father was a fairly modern guy, but he didn’t carry a cell phone with him, and Gibbs was getting a little concerned.

He glanced over at DiNozzo, who was watching a holiday movie, looking somewhat relaxed despite the circumstances. After a fairly comfortable Thanksgiving—all things considered—with Senior, Gibbs had reluctantly agreed to let Tony’s father come for Christmas. And Jackson had been coming every year—this would be the third in a row. And this year, they had seventy-two hours off, after having worked the last few Christmases.

Due to some business dealings, Senior wouldn’t be here for a couple of days, and Gibbs had intended to explain his relationship with Tony to his father, before Senior arrived, in all his unique self serving glory.

If it could be called such a thing. The guy irritated the hell out of Gibbs sometimes, but he was Tony’s father, and because DiNozzo needed that connection, Gibbs would swallow his emotions, and deal with the guy.

“He’ll be fine,” Tony said, glancing over. Even though he’d been concentrating on the movie, Gibbs had known Tony was attuned to him and his emotions.

“Yeah, he will be,” Gibbs responded a little gruffly, feeling like an idiot for worrying too much. Tony paused his movie and crossed the room, coming to stand behind Gibbs. “Sit down,” he ordered gently and Gibbs’ muscles unlocked at the promise that for a little bit, someone else would be in control.

Gibbs sank into the kitchen chair, sighing as Tony’s long, elegant fingers dug into his shoulder muscles. God, that was good! He let out a groan, allowing his head to drop forward and giving Tony access to his tense muscles. That massage course Tony’d taken when he’d been thinking about a career in sports medicine had sure as hell paid off. At least for Gibbs.

“If you keep groaning like that, I’m going to think you want to get lucky,” Tony said in an undertone, leaning in to nip at Gibbs’ earlobe.

“Who says I don’t,” he challenged, trying to keep the chuckle out of his voice. DiNozzo had a hell of a way of distracting him.

“Get a room!” a gruff voice called out and Tony jumped away from Gibbs, coughing loudly.

“Dad!” Gibbs jumped up as well, knowing it was pointless to pretend there wasn’t some level of intimacy here.

“Leroy,” his father replied, winking in Gibbs’ direction. “Got something to tell me?”

Gibbs shot a glance to Tony, who grabbed his father’s bags. “See why it’s not a guest room any more, Leroy. How ya been, Tony?”

“Dad!”

Of course the old man wasn’t going to let them off the hook. Gibbs watched him hang up his coat on the rack next to the door, withdrawing a small box, which he cradled loosely in his hand. Gibbs stepped in close and pulled his father into a hug. The happy sound his father made as he was hugged relaxed Gibbs more than Tony’s back massage, despite the situation, and he stepped back, not quite sure how to approach this.

Gibbs motioned his father to sit down on the comfortable, if elderly, couch. “Want a beer?” he asked, more for himself than his old man.

“Naw,” his father replied, sending a wink over Gibbs’ shoulder at what had to be Tony. “You boys doing okay?”

With a glance at Tony, Gibbs settled into the chair next to the couch, watching his father. He didn’t think the old man would have any problem with his relationship with Tony; his father was incredibly open minded all things considered. But Gibbs knew he had to face facts. This was an unconventional relationship at best, and he shouldn’t expect that Dad would understand.

“Doing good,” Gibbs finally said, staring at his fingers.

“Gonna join us, Son?” Gibbs’ father said, motioning to Tony and patting the couch beside him.

“Don’t you guys want to talk?” Tony asked, a little unease creeping into his voice.

“You’re a part of the family,” Gibbs father said, and his voice quavered for a moment. Tony gasped and Gibbs held his breath, wondering if his father meant that literally or not. But when his father gazed at Gibbs, the expression in his eyes told Gibbs volumes.

He swallowed hard as Tony sat on the other side of his father, wondering, hoping…

He and Tony hadn’t come out directly to anyone yet, and this was a hell of a first time.

“I know, Leroy,” his father said simply, gazing at the box in his hands. Even though it was almost a formality, Gibbs knew he was required to respond in some way.

“Know?” he finally said, his own voice a bit unsteady.

“Who you like,” his father said, lifting his head. “That you and Tony here are an item. That what they call it nowadays, Tony? An item?”

Tony shrugged helplessly. He was sitting on the opposite side of Jackson, and that just wasn’t enough for Gibbs; he needed more contact. He needed his father to not be divided by his and Tony’s positions.

“Tony, c’mere,” Gibbs said, his voice gentle. Tony got up and sat on the arm of the chair, at first stiff, but when Gibbs reached for his hand, twining clammy fingers together, Tony let out a sigh and allowed his body to relax a little.

“Knew ya cared about that boy since ya came to Stillwater,” his father admitted. “Before that. Read an article ‘bout how ya almost drowned and Tony saved ya.”

Gibbs nodded, not daring to interrupt his father.

“Then ya came to Stillwater and I watched how he looked out for ya.” Gibbs’ father reached out, patting Tony’s knee. “And then that next Christmas, ya called him Bubblebutt. Ya don’t have one of those, Tony.”

Both men chuckled, Tony’s fingers tightening in Gibbs’ hand. He covered Tony’s with both of his, wanting the extra contact, and Tony leaned against him comfortably.

“Leroy, tell that boy he’s just fine as is.”

“You are,” Gibbs added in a rush.

“And I was thinkin’, Son,” his father continued. “If Tony makes ya happy, why arentcha making an honest man outta him. Can’t be that it’s illegal to marry. I checked. Been legal in DC since ’09.”

“We’re in Virginia,” Tony put in. “Its not legal here, Jack. And anyway, I don’t want to be fifth Ex Mrs.Gibbs.”

“You never could,” Gibb replied, glancing up at Tony. He wanted to say a lot more, but he didn’t know how to broach the subject, especially not in front of his father.

“Know it isn’t legal in this infernal state,” his father growled. “But I’m not getting’ any younger, Leroy.” His father just continued on. “So I went and got ya both these. You can make it legal, or be informal, but ya gotta do it in front of God and your old man.”

With a little embarrassed shrug, he plopped the box on Tony’s thigh. Gibbs reached for the box, opening it, and caught his breath as he realized what was inside. Nested in a pile of velvet were two rings—platinum from what Gibbs could tell, plain and elegant. There was no point in admitting they were anything but wedding rings. He trailed a thumb over them, looking at his father. Platinum wasn’t a cheap metal, and his dad had never been flush.

“I—” Gibbs began, interrupting himself with a sigh.

“Thank you,” Tony put in, rescuing him. “They’re beautiful, Jack.”

“Dad.”

“Dad?”

“Dad,” his father said with a small nod, a little smug smile on his face. “You’re more family than at least a couple of the redheads. Never met ‘em and that’s okay.” He reached over, ruffling Tony’s hair.

“You boys think about it for a coupla days. Decide if you want to do it legally or just private in front of me. Wear the rings all the time, or only wear ‘em when you’re home. I don’t care. This is the important thing,” he said, jerking his head toward Tony and then Gibbs. “Good to know my boy’s bein’ taken care of, Bubblebutt!”

“DAD!” Gibbs and Tony chorused in unison.

~*~

Two crazy days later, Gibbs found himself standing next to Tony in front of an officiate. Their only guest was Jackson—Senior’s plane had been delayed. Tony hadn’t told his father what was going on, only that they had something to celebrate. Tony’d privately admitted to both Gibbs and Jackson that it was better that they didn’t have Senior at the wedding. He still had no idea about them, and it might be a huge shock.

Instead, they would leave the ceremony and get drinks while they waited for Senior’s plane to arrive, then Tony was using a sizable stock dividend to take them out to a high end steak joint he loved.

The ceremony went by almost too quickly for Gibbs. He recited his vows, refusing to get misty when he and Tony slipped rings on the other’s hand. The rings had to have cost a fortune, but Gibbs’ father had been so damn proud, so damn accepting.

As Gibbs stepped back after a blazing-hot kiss from his new husband, he looked over at his father, pulling the other man into a tight embrace. “Thanks, Dad,” he whispered.

“My pleasure, Leroy,” his father replied, wiping his eyes. “It really is, boys. I love you two.”

“Love you too, Dad,” Gibbs whispered.

“Now let me met this Senior character,” he replied, clapping Tony on the back. “I think I’m gonna like him.”

“God help me,” Gibbs muttered, the gleam of his ring catching his eye.

“God help you?” his father replied with a chuckle. “God help me, Leroy. You married into the family, I’m stuck with it.”

“Dad!” Gibbs exclaimed before they all burst out into laughter.

“Merry Christmas, boys. May this be the first of many.”

“Merry Christmas, Dad!”
