Gibbs kept one eye on Tony as he made the drive north on 95, thankful that the roads were empty this earlu. And thankful that he’d gotten Tony to eat a little. A few bites and Bernice, the night cook, had packed them a to go bag, another sandwich for Tony, a soda, a thermos of coffee for Gibbs.
Tony’d been quiet the entire drive, though he kept pulling his phone out and tapping the small keys. Gibbs would let him work through it and talk when he needed to.
If ne needed to.
DiNozzo held a lot close, doling out useless info, while keeping the serious stuff quiet. It was one of the many ways he was skillfully masked.
“I never knew,” Tony said quietly, voice a little unsteady. “I always thought—”
“No way to now,” Gibbs assured, squeezing Tony’s knee. He had a hell of a cover story.
“I guess.” Tony turned on the map light and began studying the file. “Why this? Why Caffrey? What pulled him out of retirement like this?”
“Damned if I know.”
“Something’s hinky about this, Gibbs.”
Gibbs privately agreed, though he wouldn’t admit to it. Not now, not yet, not while Tony was working through this stuff. Gibbs had to be sure it was real, rather than just their hopes, and that’d mean he’d have to study the file. At length.
“Ya think?” Gibbs finally said.
“Yeah, and I’m going to get to the bottom of it.”
“Not alone, DiNozzo. Got me.”
“Thank you,” Tony whispered, hand drifting to Gibbs’ thigh.
“Read the file out loud, Tony. Maybe somethin’ will come to us.”
