I've been kicking around something and thought I'd throw it to a poll here. As you may know, my roommate has been unemployed for a bit, with no job opportunities on the horizon. As a result, I'm looking into some alternate income streams. I'm considering self publishing a few short stories under this pen name, and wanted to know if there would be any interest.

These would be short works (under 10,000 words). They would be completely original male/male. There is a possibility of a menage or two with male/male/female interaction. These could be teen rated to adult, depending on the story.

Just me: Would you be interested in purchasing any originals. If so, what would be the highest price point you'd consider? Would there be any genres you'd specifically want to read, or themes and genres you would not? Would you read serialized stories--multiple books featuring the same characters and emotional arc?

Thanks so much for your input.

There is NOTHING that I wouldn't buy from you. I say go for it! *hugs*

I'd buy your stuff! *grins* I agree, go for it :)

I'd buy it... though I wish I'd not have to be so stingy with the money

poll

There is nothing that I see myself not liking that you had written.

From: [identity profile] slashscribe.livejournal.com

I don't have a digital book reading device...I do have an iPhone, but I don't use it to read books-my eyes get really bothered if I read too much on the iPhone screen. So, I wouldn't be able to buy your original fic because I'd have nothing to read it with.

Howeverrrrrrr, if I DID have something to read it with, I'd buy it in a second, and I'd consider just buying it anyway and reading it on my iPhone because I love to read your stuff.

So I didn't fill out the poll because I had more to say than the options gave me.

Also, though, IDK how much I care to read M/M stories that aren't NCIS fics. If they're yours I probably would because I know you, but IDK because it's more about the particular characters for me in fandom than it is about being M/M. If they were pr0n-y M/M original fic stories, I don't know that I'd be that interested in reading them, but I'm quite different from most of the ladies (and men?) who read your fic. If they were long stories about the struggles of these men in forming a relationship or something, I'd probably be more apt to buy the fic.

But again-that's just me and I think I'm much different than most of your clientele because of the whole lack of interest in men thing. *g*

But I definitely say go for it because even if 1 person buys your fic, that's $1 more than you had before you published it, and worst case scenario, you write fun stories and don't make any money, right? IDK. I'd just go for it!

I can't say "There's absolutely nothing you can write that I won't buy", because I'm not sure about ANYTHING EVAR, but for the most part, lady, I'd buy what you wrote.

I say go for it. I'd definitely buy the first one! After that, I'd likely buy because it's you and I love your writing, although I'm less likely to buy prOn concerning characters I don't know if there's no emotional arc to go along with it. Hope that makes sense.

I haven't bought fiction online, but if I did I think I'd go for a collection of 'best of' or something along those lines, and I would pay more. Sort of like a Zine.

I have sold disks of fanfic, with pictures (of actors in screen caps and with research images such as maps), with helpful info for writers, and canon info such as the episodes and articles - of an older fandom - a compendium or 'zine, as it were, for years. It comes in PDF format on a disk. I'm saying this because the collection seems to appeal to a lot of people. Hope it works out for you!

I probably wouldn't buy BDSM or threesomes, but I think this is a great idea.

From: [identity profile] triskellion.livejournal.com

There are a few gay romance publishers out there you could consider looking at for anything you write. It might be a way to add to your audience. But this sounds like a great project.

I'd love to say I would buy your original stuff; but the fact is I'm flat broke and will be for a long time.
I wish you all the best in your endevor.

I put maybe due to horrible finances on this end.

I thought your price options were very reasonable. I'm more concerned about the subject matter. I trust you to write good stuff!!! I'm just not sure I'd want to read short fic menage. If it was a longer story then I might, but in a short fic I don't think I'd want to read anything other than m/m! This is partly because of the presence of the woman when my preference is for slash but partly also that I'm not wild about threesomes unless there's something important emotionally making the threesome happen. If it's just "woo-hoo - let's all have sex!" then I find that a bit boring to be honest and I'm not sure how much reasoning you can get over in a less than 10,000 word OC fic. It's easier if it's fanfic because we already know the characters.

I definitely think you should go for it if you have the ideas! If it could generate a bit of income that would be great when times are difficult.

I'd say, under normal circumstances, I'd give anything you write a go, but since I don't even read all of your NCIS fanfic (Gabby, for example), I'd be lying. ;)

I think Ash explained it beautifully. I'm in the slash business because of the guys. I may be less likely to read about people I have no emotional connection to.

That said, I have read your original stuff and enjoyed it a lot, so chances are I'd give new stuff a definite go! :)

Funny thing is that the books I'm usually reading aren't heavy on Teh Smex (slash or het) at all. So I'm guessing this really is only interesting for me when fandom characters are involved. How weird is that? ponders*

As for the price, considering that it's standard to pay a buck for a thousand words for charity, I'd say you're cheap. *g* (And how much do I love that you call "under 10,000 words" a "short" story! LOL)

Dues to financial woes of my own, I wouldn't be able to buy anything. :( However, I would pimp your fic on my LJ and DW pages.

omg love I would TOTALLY buy your stuff! you know I am a huge fan of your writing!

I think it is a great way to earn a little extra $$!

Pssst - avoid the $1.99 price tag like the plague! Apparently it's a sales-killer, whereas $2.99 and $0.99 do better. Plus, at $2.99 or upwards on Amazon you can get 70% royalties rather than 35%. Apparently things sell just as well, or better, at $2.99. My best-seller is a $2.99er, and my second-best is a $3.99 novella.

So anyway - I'm not big on M/M without any F whatsoever, or stuff involving shifters, or gallons of semen. Or non-con/very dubcon. *shudder* So I'd skip those. M/M/F is fine, I just have to have at least one hot girl to drool over. ;)

Thanks so much! And boy, do I know what you mean about the money!

Oh gosh, you are right about reading on the Iphone! It is sooo hard on the eyes.

Thanks so so much for the detailed feedback, Ash :)
