In Therapy Part 2

They’d lost seventeen good people.

Their co-workers.

Their friends.

He and Gibbs were gonna take Dearing down. Not Fornell, who would gladly take the glory. This was a problem for NCIS and they would resolve it. Just like they had Ari.

Tony would tell Dr. Kate’s Sister whatever she wanted to hear, as long as she field cleared him. He’d come to see her every week for a year, if that meant he and Gibbs could take Dearing down.

They had to.

Tony fantasized about stringing Dearing up by the balls. He bet Gibbs fantasized the same things. But they never talked about it; the few times they were in the same room, Tony’d banked his anger, hiding it under a veneer of humor, even if it was a little brittle. Gibbs understood, but he wouldn’t say anything. They’d been partners for a decade and Gibbs knew. There were more alike than not and they’d walk through fire to get their man.

“Tony?” Dr. Cranston had come in at some point and was staring at him. Tony rearranged his features, giving her a small leer. She knew his coping mechanisms too well.

“How’re you doing?” she asked.

He opened his mouth, intending to give her a glib reply that was nowhere near the truth. “Not good,” he said instead.

“What is it?” her expression was empathetic, and some of the tension in Tony’s shoulders loosened. He still had the basketball-sized lump of anger in his gut—that wouldn’t go away until Dearing was behind bars—or six feet under.

He’d do whatever he could to get field cleared, but he’d tell her the truth.

Maybe she could help him win over the anger. Hadn’t out-of-control anger been what had led them to this place?

He could be honest with her. Sure, she was a shrink, but she was Kate’s sister. And Tony had the feeling she knew him better than anyone this side of Gibbs, and that was saying something.
As the words, the anger—the grief—poured out of him, Tony began to feel as if the team might be okay. They were broken, but they were alive. And with Dr Kate’s sister’s help, they might come out of this.
